Hand Carved Antique Barn Door

A one-of-a-kind piece of living history, carved by hand and weathered by time

This vintage wooden door panel is a rare celebration of traditional craftsmanship. Every surface is hand-carved in deep relief, and layers of aged pigment in crimson, olive green, mustard yellow and faded turquoise show through the weathered wood. Decades of use have left it with a rich, lived-in patina that no modern finish can imitate.

Design and Carving

The door is divided into a classic panelled layout, with carved fields framed by slim vertical and horizontal bands.

• Upper and lower panels: Four tall recessed panels hold the main motifs. Two feature stacked, lattice-textured pomegranates on a curling vine, an ancient symbol of abundance, fertility and prosperity. The other two show flowing tulip and carnation-style blooms with long, sweeping leaves, carved with a fluid, rhythmic quality.
• Central divider strips: Narrow vertical bands carved with undulating vine scrollwork separate the panels and tie the composition together.
• Mid-section frieze: A raised band of stylised floral forms picked out in bold mustard yellow, with small heart-shaped accents in the gaps, forms the visual heart of the door.
• Horizontal borders: Two delicate bands of carved leaf-and-tendril scrollwork frame the central frieze above and below.

Colour and Patina

The original polychrome decoration remains partly intact, with red blooms, green foliage and golden yellow accents standing out against the warm, dark wood. Chipped whitewash and flecks of turquoise on the frame show that the door has been repainted over the years. This weathering is the main charm of the piece: worn edges, natural wood grain and softly faded pigments give it depth and authenticity.
