Hand Carved Antique Door
This statement door works as architecture, as art, or as a piece of storytelling. It has five carved panels framed by a bold geometric border, and the whole surface is finished in a soft, weathered sage green that shows decades of character.
The Carved Panels
Each panel holds a figure or scene carved in relief, so the images stand out from the surface and catch the light differently through the day. The recessed backgrounds show the warm reddish-brown of the natural timber, which sets off the pale green figures.
Upper panels: Two tall panels sit side by side at the top, each with a robed, standing figure in profile. One holds an ornate staff or emblem topped with a small cross-like motif. The other holds a vessel or sprig of foliage beside a decorated column. The flowing drapery is carved with fine, confident lines.
Central panel: The wide horizontal panel at the heart of the door is its focal point. A winged lion, a mythic guardian, strides across the panel beside a bearded figure, with an ornamental column or tree motif completing the scene. It reads like a fragment of an ancient frieze.
Lower panels: Two more tall panels show warrior-like figures. One holds a spear upright and the other carries a bow, so the door feels guarded and protective. Their styling echoes the classical and ancient relief traditions that inspired the work.
The Border and Finish
A continuous zigzag border runs around the full perimeter and between the panel sections, punctuated by small diamond and dot accents. It adds rhythm and a graphic, almost tribal energy that balances the figurative carving. Horizontal bands of chevrons divide the door into its panels and tie the composition together.
The sage-green paint is intentionally distressed. Darker tones settle into the carved lines, and the paint wears naturally at the edges and raised surfaces to reveal the wood beneath. This gives the door depth and a lived-in patina, and no two sections look quite the same. An original iron latch on the right side keeps the door's authentic, functional heritage.
Styling and Use
This door suits many settings:
- As a working entrance or interior door for a home, villa, boutique, or restaurant that wants a distinctive threshold.
- As wall art, mounted or leaned as a sculptural statement in a living room, hallway, or entry.
- As a headboard, a room divider, or a backdrop for a console or bar.
- In design schemes that favour bohemian, eclectic, Mediterranean, rustic, vintage, or global-traditional looks. The green is calm enough to pair with natural stone, white walls, brass, and warm woods.
Why It Stands Out
- Hand-carved figurative panels in bold relief
- Mythic and historical imagery: a winged lion, robed figures, a spearman, and an archer
- A graphic geometric border that frames the whole design
- A distressed sage-green finish over warm timber tones
- Authentic latch hardware
- A one-of-a-kind character that no machine-made door can match
