Description

Some furniture is made to blend in. This bookshelf is made to be noticed. Rising in a tall, four-tier silhouette, it looks like a piece that has lived a long and interesting life. Its surfaces carry the layered patina of old paint, sun-warmed timber and years of quiet use, and it will bring instant depth and history to any room.

The frame is built from richly grained wood with a deep, warm brown tone that shows through the distressed finish. The front stiles are washed in weathered ochre and antique gold, with the colour worn back at the edges as if softened by time. Set into them are round, aged-metal rosette fittings, spaced evenly down both sides. They add a handcrafted, almost architectural detail that recalls old Rajasthani doors, trunks and haveli joinery.

At the crown, a carved frieze in verdigris green adds a decorative touch. The finely detailed relief catches the light beautifully. Above it, the top panel is finished in a muted blue-grey patina that sits well against the warm timber below. It also makes a handy display surface for a plant, a lamp or a favourite piece of art.

The sides are open, vertical slats, which keep the bookshelf from feeling heavy. They let light and air pass through and give the piece an airy, lattice-like character that looks different from every angle. The four open shelves are finished in a soft teal-grey wash, a cool contrast to the warm frame. They are deep enough to hold hardbacks, coffee-table books, storage boxes, framed photographs and collectables, and the sturdy plinth base gives the whole unit a grounded, stable look.

Key Features

  • Four open shelves for books, décor and everyday essentials
  • Distressed multi-tone finish in teal-grey, ochre, verdigris and warm wood
  • Slatted side panels for a light, airy look
  • Decorative metal rosette detailing along the front frame
  • Carved verdigris frieze beneath the top panel
  • Solid plinth base for stability and a finished look
  • Each piece is unique, as hand-finished distressing means no two are identical

Where It Belongs

  • Home study or library: pair it with a dark wood writing desk, a brass banker's lamp and a velvet armchair for a classic reading corner.
  • Living room: use it as a display piece for books, brassware, glass jars, curios and framed prints.
  • Bedroom or reading nook: it works well beside a window as a personal shelf of favourite reads.
  • Boutique hotels, cafés and studios: it is a natural focal point for spaces that want warmth and a story.

Styling Ideas

Mix vertical stacks of books with horizontal ones, and leave breathing room between them. Add a few objects with contrasting textures, such as a glass jar of sea glass, an antique clock, a small brass piece or a trailing plant. The teal and green tones in the finish pair well with jewel-toned upholstery, and the warm ochre works nicely with terracotta, cream walls and vintage rugs.
