Overview
This hand-carved wooden panel is a piece of salvaged architectural craftsmanship. The weathered turquoise-green finish sits over deep, warm brown timber. Its tall rectangular frame is built from layered, recessed, and raised sections, and each section shows the skill of the artisan who made it. It works as a statement wall piece, a headboard backdrop, a room divider, or a restored door.
Design and Carving Details
The border. A continuous Greek key (meander) pattern runs around the whole frame. On the left and right edges it forms long vertical channels, and across the top and bottom it forms horizontal bands. The pattern is carved in relief, so light and shadow give the frame depth throughout the day. This border gives the panel its architectural look.
The upper panel. A recessed square panel holds a carved rosette with finely cut, radiating petals around a raised central boss. Small decorative corner motifs sit inside the square. The rosette reads as a sunflower or chrysanthemum, a classic symbol of warmth and abundance in traditional Indian woodwork.
The middle band. A horizontal strip with chamfered (angled) corners separates the two main panels. It repeats the meander motif in miniature, tying the border to the central carvings.
The lower panel. This tall panel holds the most intricate carving. It has a fleur-de-lis-inspired form with flowing scrolls and curling tendrils. A second rosette sits at its center, set inside a teal-ringed medallion. Small leaf-like corner ornaments finish the panel and show how much attention went into the smallest details.
Finish and Character
The finish is the main attraction. Layers of aged teal and verdigris-green paint have worn naturally over the years, letting the dark wood show through in the grooves, edges, and raised surfaces. The paint is not uniform. It is rubbed back in some places and dense in others, and this gives the panel its patina. Natural cracks, grain marks, and signs of age are part of its history, and no two pieces are exactly alike.
