Overview

This hand-carved wooden door brings the mystique of ancient Egypt into a modern interior. Its weathered turquoise frame surrounds five recessed panels carved in low relief with figures inspired by Egyptian tomb and temple art. It works as a working door and as a statement piece in its own right.

Design and Artistry

The door is divided into five carved panels:

• Top pair: Two tall panels each show a standing figure in classic Egyptian profile, with detailed headdresses, pleated kilts, and a stately posture.
• Central panel: A wide horizontal panel shows two bull-like figures facing each other in a mirrored composition, a symbol of strength and balance.
• Bottom pair: Two more tall panels show jackal-headed and ceremonial figures, echoing the top pair and giving the door a sense of symmetry.

Rope-twist and beaded carved borders run between the panels and down the central dividers. They add rhythm and texture and frame each scene like an artifact in a display case.

Finish and Colour

The frame has a rich turquoise-blue finish, deliberately distressed so the natural wood grain shows through at the edges and corners. The colour deepens toward the bottom, which gives the door an aged, sun-washed look. Inside the frame, the carved panels are in warm natural wood tones, with the raised figures picked out in pale, chalky highlights. The cool blue against the warm wood makes the carvings stand out, and the whole door has the feel of an antique found in an old Cairo courtyard.
